Cape Town

Welcome to www.staywestcape.co.za a sub site of one of South Africa's largest accommodation portals. The city of Cape Town is one of South Africa's finest destinations and is continually referred to as a dream or top holiday and travel destination, the centre of South African tourism, affectionally know to South Africans as the mother city, it would be sad if one was not able to visit Cape Town at least once during a visit to South Africa.

As the second largest South African city, the regional capital and the key city of the Western Cape, and the country as a whole, Cape Town is an ideal base, a springboard to tour the Western Cape region, offering visitors a combination of unique natural beauty, the expected excitement that surrounds big city life a start to a journey of exploration that only South Africa has to offer local and international visitors alike.

We invite you to read this section which covers Cape Town and the Cape peninsula specifically, click here to view more general Western Cape travel information, scroll down for more on Cape Town and surrounds:

Western Cape info

Centered around the beautiful city of Cape Town, the peninsula area is surrounded by sea from the South, East and West. A myriad of large and small bays, inlets and interesting towns or villages are spread throughout the region offering the visitor a range of holiday activities and accommodation choices that will satisfy every need, the Western Cape is a paradise to explore.

CLIMATE INFORMATION
They say that the Atlantic meets the Indian Ocean at Cape Point, whilst not exactly true, the Cape Point Nature Reserve is an interesting attraction allowing one to look out over the ocean knowing that the next land is the antarctic. Yes, Cape Town can get cold in winter but only by African standards, the temperature very rarely gets to freezing, many Capetonians have never seen snow in their lives. Windy on occasion, more specific to the spring period of August to November but extremely moderate from December through to May, in the writers opinion, the best time to visit.

A winter rainfall region, unlike most of the Southern African region which enjoys summer rainfall, it can get quite cold and damp between June and August.

ATTRACTIONS
The main attractions of the peninsula region are the beautiful beaches; Cape Towns' majestic Table Mountain and it's modern new cable car system; the wine land areas of Stellenbosch and Paarl, although away from the peninsula, are a short drive away. In Cape Town itself, the magnifcent Table Bay and harbour views looking over Robben Island with the mountain as a bag drop, are simply stunning, particularly from the top of Table Mountain. Take a ferry accross to the island, this was a prison island, or penal colony, Nelson Mandela, together with other ANC politicians spent all or part of their imprisonment  on the island, well worth the trip accross Table Bay.

The Victoria and Alfred waterfront in Cape Town with the internationally recognised Two Oceans Aquarium are a must visit, a little commercialised with shopping malls and restaurants to equal any in the world, take a sundowner cruise, leaving regularly from the V&A or simply enjoy some fine sea food and watch the activities of a fully working harbour as you sip some of the finest wines in the world.

Kap De Gooie Hoop the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Town, mother city to South Africans, was established in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company in the form of Jan Van Riebeeck, tasked with setting up a supply station for the ships as they plied the ocean to trade, mainly in spices,  with the East. The original fort, built by him can be viewed to this day and has been finely restored, take a trip to this and the many other museums in and around Cape Town. One can only imagine the relief and joy the seafarers of yesteryear must have felt as they rounded Cape Point after months at sea without fresh supplies, and saw the magnificent mountain in the distance.

From internationally acclaimed golf courses such as Arabella; Steenberg; Mowbray and West Lake to whale watching in Hermanus, just over an hiurs drive,  and the adrenalin rush of shark cage diving, the tourism options in this wondeful area are unlimited. There are beautiful sea side resorts a short drive from Cape Town, Strand; Gordons Bay and Hermanus offer visitors sea, sunshine and many interesting activities.
